Jessica Expat Interview

By Interviewer at 02/24/09 12:41

What is your name?

Jessica

What is your current age or age range?

20s

What country are you native to?

I am originally from the New England area of the United States.

What area of Italy do you current live (Providence, City, general area etc.)

I am now living in Rome.

How long have you lived in Italy?

I have lived in Rome since 2005. Before I moved here permanently, I had done a 4 month exchange program to Padua in 2001.

When you moved to Italy, did you bring your family? What do they think?

I did not bring my family, and they are still back in the US. They were extremely supportive of my move, which made things much easier.

Did you leave your family behind? How do you handle the separation?

I talk to them quite often and things are easier these days with Skype, etc. I also go back home once a year and they visit me about once a year.

What made you decide to relocate to a different country?

I fell in love with Italy and having focused on the Italian Renaissance during my art history training, it felt like a natural step when I realized I wanted to work in the art history field without becoming a professor.

Why did you choose Italy, or what factors helped you to decide to choose Italy?

Like I said above, my educational background kept me interested. I am also of Italian American descent, so I'm sure that played a part as well.

What other countries did you consider? Why didn't you choose those?

I never considered anywhere else!

Was it difficult to get the documents you needed to live and/or work there? (residency and/or working permit)

Yes, but I worked on getting my dual citizenship for about 9 months before moving here, which was well worth it.

What was the most difficult part of the transition?

I was prepared for a lot after having lived in Padua and I had the advantage of knowing the language, but the hardest part is just figuring out how to get things done and where to locate items or pieces of information you would easily be able to know about in your own country.

Do you plan on returning to your home country? Why or why not?

I get asked this all the time and I'm really not sure. The more you stay, the harder it is to go back. I just always say that for now I can't imagine myself going home....

Do you miss your family, friends or old home and habits?

Yes!! All the time!

What do you miss the most about your home country?

Friends, family, certain American attitudes of habits that don't exist here.
